But air is mostly nitrogen (nearly 80 %!). Result: the fumes contain little CO\u2082 (only 10 to 15 %).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combustion in the presence of N2 produces nitrogen oxides, which are the source of acid pollution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oxy-combustion changes this pattern: instead of air, quasi-pure oxygen (95-99 %), produced in an air separation unit, is used. To prevent the flame from becoming too hot, part of the fumes already rich in CO\u2082 and water vapor is recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As summarized by <strong>Lockwood<\/strong> and his colleagues in <strong>ACS Omega (2023)<\/strong>this principle \"generates a much simpler gas stream to process, dominated by CO\u2082 and water vapor\", notably without NOx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The benefits of oxy-fuel combustion<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>An almost nitrogen-free flue gas stream<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Removing nitrogen from the equation yields gases where CO\u2082 accounts for 70 to 90 % of the volume (after water condensation).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Simplified capture<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>In conventional combustion, heavy processes are needed to separate the diluted CO\u2082. Here, as <strong>Toftegaard et al. in <\/strong><strong><em>Fuel<\/em><\/strong><strong> (2010)<\/strong>purification is much easier, which reduces the energy costs of capture\".&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multi-fuel compatibility<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Oxy-combustion has been tested with coal, natural gas, biomass and even cement. According to a<strong>IEA Bioenergy (2022)<\/strong>It is particularly promising in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as cement and steel.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Opening the way to CO2 recovery&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If oxy-combustion is attracting so much interest, it's not just for capturing CO\u2082, but also for the <strong>reuse<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A concentrated and relatively pure CO\u2082 stream opens the door to numerous pathways for <strong>valuation<\/strong> These include methanol production, the manufacture of synthetic fuels, mineral carbonation and even the feeding of microalgae cultures.
